Living Off The Grid When The Lights Go Out
There are few circumstances more annoying than having the power go out–especially during the 2 minute warning of a superbowl game. I know. This actually happened to me once. Fortunately, I had a back up generator, and set a land speed record turning it on so I could finish the game. That was many years ago. From the events of that fateful day, I decided to avoid any potential interruptions in the power supply system by setting up my own off-the-grid solar power system. I’ve never regretted that decision. In fact, it was probably my best investment ever. It has paid me many dividends in peace of mind and tranquility ever since–not to mention not having an electric bill. Blackouts and rolling brown-outs are becoming common place. Our nations antiquated power grid is needing more and more repairs all the time. Plus, the monthly electrical fees are becoming quite exorbitant and there’s no end in sight.
President Obama, prior to his election, told the San Francisco Chronicle back in 2008, “electricity rates will skyrocket under his cap and trade plan.” That’s cheery news! Furthermore, FOX News published an article in January 2009 titled, “Powerful Solar Storm Could Shut Down the U.S. For Months.” This article states, “A new study from the National Academy of Sciences outlines grim possibilities on earth for a worst case scenario solar storm. Damage to power grids and other communication systems could be catastrophic, with effects leading to a potential loss of government control of the situation.” Read the rest of this entry »
